Los Angeles Chargers would be wise to bring back FS Tre Boston

The Chargers landed the best safety in the 2018 NFL draft in Derwin James. Although James has shown to do it all when he is on the field, he’s suited better as the team’s strong safety where he’s able to line up closer to the line of scrimmage and wreak havoc there.

Safety Jahleel Addae has failed at covering the deep part of the field in coverage, and his inability to tackle is obvious whether he’s coming downfield or in open space.

Los Angeles doesn’t have another reliable option on the roster that can be consistent at the position. But, there’s one player out there that is proven to know the playbook, is young and healthy and that’s free safety Tre Boston.

Boston now plays for the Cardinals after he was let go to hit the free agent market. But he had his best career with L.A. in just one year in 2017 after signing with them last offseason.

His passionate attitude and ability to make plays played a huge role in the secondary. Boston was Pro Football Focus’ No. 1 FS in coverage, allowing just one reception every 193.7 coverage snaps. He ranked No. 9 in the NFL with an 87.8 coverage grade. He played 1,039-of-1,047 snaps, which was the most snaps of anyone on the unit.

Boston created a bond with not only the Chargers’ secondary, but the entire defensive unit. With his contribution, they were one of the top defenses in the NFL last season, finishing No. 3 in scoring defense.

Pairing him with James and his former teammates would create an electric defense and the price wouldn’t cost much to do so. Los Angeles could get away with trading a lower-tier player or sacrificing a late-round draft pick in the future if they felt a reunion was possible.
