Los Angeles Chargers’ Desmond King been the best CB the past 2 weeks

Chargers cornerback Desmond King II was the winner of the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s best defensive back in 2015.

However, with fewer takeaways in the 2016 season came a drop in draft stock, all the way to the fifth round to be precise. King’s timed speed and size also hurt him in the eyes of scouts leading up the 2017 NFL draft. After being the team’s selection on Day 3 last year, King proved to be a steal of the draft class.

The former Hawkeye is once again proving to be a valuable piece in defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s defense. King was graded as the highest CB the past two weeks (92.1) after his stellar performances against the Browns and Titans, per Pro Football Focus.

King has also served as Los Angeles’ punt returner and has been electric by showing he’s capable of what the team has struggled to do in recent years by gaining positive yardage.

He has certainly caught the eye of many fans as well as Chargers analyst Daniel Jeremiah, who had high praise for the young corner.

“He’s been awesome. I mean, the last couple weeks he’s just really been a huge lift to the team, and with the special teams now a couple weeks going. (He’s) solidified that spot (as a punt returner) and, to me, you look at a guy that’s making great decisions on when to field the ball. He gets north and south. There’s not a lot of backtracking, running east and west. He gets positive yards and he breaks tackles,” Jeremiah said, per the team’s official website.

Through seven weeks, King has tallied up 24 tackles (19 solo), two tackles for loss, five passes defensed and two interceptions. And the best has yet to come for the 23-year old defensive back.
