While Chargers coach Anthony Lynn and his staff were in Orlando, FL., to coach the AFC Pro Bowlers, Los Angeles’ scouts and front office members, were down in Mobile, AL working hard to find players who can help bolster the roster and build a team capable of making a deep postseason run in 2019.
Last year, the Bolts selected four players who attended the Senior Bowl — Uchenna Nwosu, Justin Jones, Kyzir White and Scott Quessenberry — each of whom still has a spot on the roster.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Los Angeles’ 2019 draft class looked similar, given the fact that they seem to value prospects with production, have good character and that have finished school.
With that being said, here are four standouts that I believe the Bolts should target come April.
There’s no denying that the offensive line will need a makeover, both on the interior and outside. It was evident that they started to fall apart towards the end of the season after entering as one of the top units in the league. The Chargers are likely to address it within the first couple rounds, which is why Kansas State’s Dalton Risner would make a great match.
Risner has experience playing center, guard and tackle, though he said that he is most comfortable at tackle as he transitions to the next level. He manned the right tackle position the majority of practices and during the game Saturday, where he shined among his peers.
Risner moved quickly to meet pass rushers at the edge and did a good job controlling them through the arc. He attacked defenders and dictated their movement, using his impressive strength in their tracks and keeping them at bay with his heavy hands.
He didn’t allowed a sack in 2018 and might be an even better run blocker than he is a pass protector, where his brute power was unleashed to push defenders back to the second level.
All of that adds up to a potential first-rounder, but his energy is what instantly stands out. The coaching staff will no doubt love his aggressive and nasty demeanor towards the trenches and the game itself. If the Bolts pick him up, they might have found their fit on the offensive line.
