On Thursday, the Los Angeles Chargers made a move at placekicker, something fans have been calling for over the last couple of weeks.
The team signed Michael Badgley. Who? Exactly.
The Chargers only made the move to give Caleb Sturgis some time to rest a strained quadriceps but when he is back at full health, the team plans to keep both kickers on its active roster.
Badgley played at Miami in college and made 79.4 percent of his kicks during his time there. He made all five of his field-goal attempts during the preseason as a member of the Indianapolis Colts, but wasn’t really on the short list of free-agent kickers on the market.
The Chargers have tinkered with the kicking position, even if it hasn’t been by signing a new kicker. The decision to sign punter Donnie Jones and release Drew Kaser was entirely due to Sturgis’ familiarity with Jones as a holder during their time with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Was Sturgis (and all of the kickers before him) missing all of those kicks because Kaser couldn’t hold properly? That’s what the team is going with.
Still, Sturgis missed an extra point with Jones holding last week against the Oakland Raiders. Sturgis has missed three field goals and four extra points in five games this season, putting him on an atrocious pace.
Still, the Chargers signed a kicker that isn’t going to threaten his job, and maybe that’s why the decision was made to sign the basically unknown Badgley. Still, it seems that if you’re going to make this move, make the best move possible.
Doesn’t it seem like a poor choice to carry two placekickers on a 53-man roster?
There were better options out there. Options that could not only relieve Sturgis, but also replace him. Take a look.
